Why learn Spanish?

Q: Why learn Spanish?

A: Spanish is one of the most common (and popular) languages on the planet.  It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and is spoken natively by an estimated 400 million people worldwide.  It is often considered the third most influential language in the world, after English and French, and is the second most widely spoken language in the United States.

In addition to being common in the American south and many Hispanic enclaves of the USA, it is the language spoken in 21 countries worldwide.  These countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equitorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Peurto Rico, Span, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Obviously, if you have dealings with any of these countries then it pays to know Spanish, but given such widespread use the chances are good you'll encounter the language no matter where you go in the world.

To learn a language is to learn something of the rich heritage and traditions of the people speaking the language.  Even if you're motivated merely by curiosity rather than practicality, Spanish language, culture and history is clearly a rich, beautiful and rewarding subject and cannot really be studied without a grounding in the language.
